Warpy Story
Once a upon a time, there was a bunch of little creatures called Warpies. Their main aim in life is to get over this great, tall wall, so that they can be on The Other Side. Hence, as civilisation progressed and technology advanced, they built this great ladder, to climb over the great wall.
Things go step by step, of course, so lessons were provided as to climbing the ladder. Young warpies from birth were taught how to best advance on each step, so that in future, they can best climb the ladder. Books were written on leg lifting techniques for the ladder steps.
Then a new breed of warpies came about. They were bowlegged, making it impossible for them to climb the ladder. Day after day, year after year they practised, until some of them, although few could manage to scale half the ladder. That was considered an Achievement for them. They wrote more books on scaling the ladder, and invented new techniques on ladder climbing.
What many of them didn't realise was that they had webbed feet that could stick to the wall, allowing to climb it even faster. They were so caught up with trying to climb the ladder, that they forgot their end point was to scale over the wall.
This essentially rather dumb story is to illustrate how so many humans forget what their end point in life is, and the end point of so many processes like education, career and so on.
Let's take career as an example. Some people have well-paying jobs that they hate to the core, yet they refuse to give it up out of 'pragmatism', for the money it pays. Yet what is the whole point of having lots of money? In the end, its so that we can buy more things, pamper ourselves a little more--to make ourselves happier. If the job is going to make your life miserable, then what's the point?
I think there's a distinct difference between people who have considered their objectives before making a decision and those who haven't, even if the ultimate decision is the same. Only then do we find meaning in what we do.
